Though most drivers only travel about 10,000-20,000 miles per year in our vehicles, there are people who spend a lot more time on the road. Take Hugh and Tammy Pennington of Delton, Michigan for example. This couple managed to accumulate over a million miles on a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck over a six-year period!

The 2006 Chevy Silverado, which is a 3500 HD Crew-Cab model with an Allison transmission and Duramax diesel engine, has been all over the U.S. and Canada on several different types of missions. However, Tammy Pennington explains, she started the process with a different Silverado for philanthropic reasons. She states, "When Katrina hit, they needed drivers to get travel trailers for people to live in. So I started pulling out of Fitzgerald, Georgia at the Coachman plant. I ran Hugh's 2001 Duramax diesel (Silverado) for 150,000 miles. And then I said here's your truck back, we're going to buy me a new one."¹

After the new truck was purchased, it was used to continue this kind of work, go on vacation the northeastern U.S. and Canada, and other hauling ventures for the Indiana Transport Company. However, the odometer won't show you the large number of miles, as Tammy had to have it turned back after odometer issues. The largest repair over the six-year span was a new transmission and transfer case when the truck hit 850,000 miles in June 2011.

So, how does one achieve this feat? Tammy explains, "We drive 600 to 700 miles a day. We get to where we're delivering. We deliver and then we go on vacation. For example, once we went to see Mt. Rushmore."²
